I saw this film at a cinema in Bordeaux a few years ago and since I watch it regularly because I like to find the eye of Blake Edwards, quasi-sociological. It is not centered on an emotion or a precise message to pass on, but leaves it to each scene with the maximum of openings and possible interpretations (which suggests to some that there is nothing going on). He should really make the effort to project themselves into the situations. And there Peter Sellers you help with a few facial expressions and intonation of voice. Throughout the evening, in which he is asked he gives to experience the arrival in an unknown tribe and at first incomprehensible : everything is slightly shifted, nothing is quite in its place etc, This is the film with the most funny that I know of. As so often, Peter Sellers plays a big loner who tries hard to fit in, and only generate blunders in spite of himself. It is bad luck incarnate and through him, the curtain of the society well-oiled machine, which tears. I happen to think that some of the gags are the nightmares of Sellers desperate to make themselves understood to the other. Who has not dreamed of arriving at school in pyjamas or slippers, for example? But for once his character has more of a love story that is not just anecdotal and gives a happy outcome, as experienced by two, to his disappointment. Arrived on time, thank you Amazon! I already had the DVD but I didn't hesitate to buy the Blu-Ray upon its release because it is one of my favorite movies! The sound and the picture in HD is simply outstanding and I really took a great pleasure to review this masterpiece for the umpteenth time on my home cinema system 7. 1 top of the range. I therefore recommend the purchase of this Blu-Ray rather than the DVD to anyone with a large flat screen tv and if possible a sound HD dts 5. 1 at minimimum. Has see and review as a family. The Blu-ray and the DVD are in a nice metal box and surprise a beautiful and thick booklet inside, with a mine of info and photos. This case deserves to trôner in the collection of any film buff. The story, told in 2 hours in a very long flash-back (25 years ago) is framed by a few short scenes of the opening and ending (both with as an initial frame or the end of a steam train, which represents in the west the triumph of modernity), is that of the battle between the three visions of freedom and justice in the american west : Liberty Valance (Lee Marvin), in spite of its name misleading, is a bully without faith nor law who is terrorizing decent people with its whip and its speed with a 6 shots and imposes his authority by force ; in contrast, Leek Stoddard (James Stewart) is a young idealistic lawyer, who came to deliver the good word of law and democracy in a far-west still devoid of institutions ; and finally, John Doniphon (John Wayne) is an ideal of strength and righteousness, in the natural at the service of the community, a free man with no other home than his land, his cattle and his hopes of living peaceful and happy. In the fight without going back between the three main characters, the press, in the person of Dutton Peabody (Edmun O'brien) in the flash-back, and then Maxwell Scott (Carleton Young) and his successor in the present time, plays a very american referees. The footage is filmed with the mastery and the know-how of the great John Ford and culminates in a head-work has become a classic and a must-see film. I have no regrets.... This package is our delight, and all generations are unanimous: "The most beautiful film of my life, " said a little girl of 9 years old! We have been able to show this old movie to our teens. We have not been disappointed. Not expensive, good quality and fast delivery. It is better to save the movie in b&B during one of its many airings on tv, because this version is not even watchable. It is in the versus shot of Beckett and Ionesco in the theatre : without a doubt, the best Bertrand Blier with "balls" and "our history" TBIntelligently adapted and stylized sixties with care a novel. The shadows, the chiaroscuros are compelling and contribute to the formalization of the language of cinema as a new life of the novel.
